The Assistant Instructor is a competent small boat sailor who has been trained to assist Instructors up to National Sailing Scheme (NSS) Level 2. Assistant Instructors always work under the supervision of an RYA Senior Instructor. This award is Centre specific; The Assistant Instructor can only work within the Centre for which they were trained.
The Course will include:
- A Pre-entry style sailing assessment which includes:
- Sailing on all points of sail
- Sail a tight circular course, one tack, one gybe
- Sail a 'follow-my-leader' course
- Pick up a man-overboard dummy
- Come alongside (this could be a windward or leeward shore)
- Anchoring
- Basic principles of Instructor technique
- Training on the RYA teaching methods for beginners
- How to teach man-overboard recovery
- De-briefing skills
Tuition is provided by trained RYA Instructors using appropriate supervision ratios and is suitable for all ages.
Previous Experience required: One of the NSS Advanced Modules e.g. Seamanship Skills.
Duration:
20 hours
This can be run over two days and two evenings (e.g.: Friday evening to Sunday afternoon)
