Coaching Courses

An RYA Instructor is a competent and experienced keelboat sailor capable of sailing confidently in strong winds and handling small yachts under power, or small power boats. They will have been assessed as able to teach keelboat sailing to adults and children, both beginners and improvers, including RYA Levels 1-3, Seamanship Skills, Day Sailing, and the Youth Sailing Scheme Stages 1-4. The Instructor will always work under the supervision of a Senior Instructor. This is the basic qualification required to find employment teaching sailing. Candidates must be aged 16 or over.

Instructor courses can be run in three ways:

For an individual: Book on a pre-programmed course. Please see Dates and Events.
For a group or organisation: Sailnorfolk will run a course specifically for your organisation. Please contact us to discuss dates.
For RYA Centres: Mark, a Coach Assessor, can arrange to run a course at your Centre.

Instructor courses can be run on behalf of a Centre for a group of up to six people, or for an individual on a Sailnorfolk course. Large groups can be accommodated - please call to discuss your requirements.

The Course will include:

The structure of the National Sailing Scheme
Training in RYA teaching methods
Training beginners and improvers
Instructor techniques for adults and children
Opportunity to coach students in a controlled training environment
Preparation and presentation of practical and theory sessions
Use of powered craft in a teaching environment
Use of racing as a teaching tool
Working with those with disabilities
Discussion on child protection issues

Eligibility:
Pre-entry assessment
Relevant First Aid Certificate
Powerboat Level 2 Certificate
Aged 16 or over

Duration: 5 days

Cost:
For an individual on a Sailnorfolk Course: £400
For a group course at Sailnorfolk: £780/grp
For a course run at your Centre: £130/day
