RYA Level 2: Basic Skills
National Sailing Scheme
The level 2 course will build on the basic skills learnt at level 1, you will develop your skills and knowledge. At the end of the course you will be able to sail independently, without an Instructor on board, in light winds.
This course is frequently combined with the Level 1 to create a four day course.
What will I be able to do at the end of this course?
- Understand how to rig according to weather conditions, when and how to reef, and selecting appropriate clothing and equipment
- Understand the five sailing essentials: sail trim, effective steering, boat balance and trim, keel configuration
- Man overboard recovery
- Safety and Distress procedures
- Show understanding of racing course and starting procedure
- Ropework: Use a winch, tie a Bowline, Clove Hitch, Reef Knot and Rolling Hitch
- Coming along side a moored boat, leaving and returning to a mooring
- More rules of the road (river!)
- Use of engine, knowledge of procedures and manoeuvres.
Tuition is provided by trained RYA Instructors using appropriate supervision ratios and is suitable for all ages.
Previous Experience required: RYA Level 1 or equivalent experience
