National Sailing Scheme
This course focuses on the control skills needed to sail and manoeuvre in moderate to strong conditions. You will be capable of making independent seamanlike decisions.
This course is an excellent pre-entry to the Day Sailing course, and the two can be easily combined into a four day module.
What will I be able to do at the end of this course?
- Leave and return to windward and leeward jetty or mooring
- Prepare to be towed by a power vessel
- Recover man overboard
- Heave to
- Reef afloat
- Sail backwards
- Anchor in different circumstances
- Ropework: Tie a fisherman's bend, and sheet bend
- Understand a variety of nautical terminology
- Apply the rules of the road (river!)
- Know sources of information on weather patterns for the day, and understand local weather effects.
- Awareness of Beaufort Wind Scale and changing weather conditions, including fog
Tuition is provided by trained RYA Instructors using appropriate supervision ratios and is suitable for all ages.
Previous Experience required: RYA Level 2 or equivalent experience
